- To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
-
- I just got a new AT&T digital cordless 900Mhz phone, and although it
- is indeed an improvement over my old cordless, I need more range. We
- have a fair amount of property, and it stretches for almost a mile away
- from the house (yes we live out in the sticks); I would like to be able to
- receive calls anywhere on the property. I either need more power output
- or a good 900Mhz antenna -- interfering with the neighbor's phone is not
- a problem, since the population density is so low. I seem to have three
- options.
-
- 1) Get a phone with higher output. The phone I have is at the FCC Max, but
- could I get a higher output phone from some source I don't know about in
- US or Canada (are the Canadian output limits higher than the US?? BC is
- just up the road from me... )
-
- 2) Get a good 900Mhz antenna for the base unit, and perhaps some sort of
- telescoping antenna for the receiver ?? I have not seen any such
- antennas sold. Are they available ??
-
- 3) Buy or make a 900Mhz amplifier for the base unit. Are these or the
- plans for them available ??
-
-
- Are there any other options I should consider? Ideally, I'd like about
- two miles of range on a phone that costs less than $500. Cellular is not
- an option.
-
- Thanks for your help,
-
- Rolf Aalto

- ps. I don't regularly read this group, so please e-mail me any response.
- If there is interest, I'll post a summary.

- Walking around downtown New Orleans, you happen upon a store front

-
- and you happen to walk into the shop for the heck of it and see an

- Questions:

- Hey Joe...
- There are 2 coming up in EPA. They are both usually big and worth attending.
-
- On Oct 2, there is the Packrats hamfest at the Bucks County Drive In Theater
- on RT 611, 4 mi north of PA tpk exit 27. There is also a VHF conference on Sat,
- Oct 1 at the Days Inn, in Horsham, I believe.
-
- Also the RF Hill ARC Hamfest on Oct 23. It's at the National Guard Armory in
- Sellersville, PA. Take the Rt 152 (Telford) exit from rt 309 and follow Rt 152
- South.

-
- Sure.. I have a Heath something that I picked up at hamfest about 5
- years ago for $10..
-
- The probe for mine has a 1 meg resistor in it to provide a total input
- impedance of 11 meg -- fairly common as I remember. But, some had to
- have a different probe for AC and ohms or, a probe with a switch that
- would short out the 1 meg resistor when measuring AC or ohms..
-
- As for calibration, the instructions with the old Heath units told you
- to use a fresh 1.5 volt battery, set the VTVM to the 1.5 volt scale
- and adjust until the meter rested on a little red dot that was just
- above the end of the scale.. AC calibration was done by measuring the
- AC supply and assuming it was 117 volts.. There was also a balance
- adjustment that had to be tweaked as you switched back and forth from
- -DC to +DC functions.. Tweak until the meter didn't move upscale as
- you switched between the two functions..
-
- I know where there are some Hewlett Packard 410B VTVM's.. One of those
- is probably going to retire my Heathkit to the backup shelf..
-
- Welcome to the wonderful world of firebottles!!

- BZZZZZZZZTTTTT!!!!! Nice try - wrong answer :-) The 'alternative' access
- mechanism in Europe is a short (200-300mS) burst on 1750Hz tone (you may
- hear it referred to as 'tone burst' for that reason). The tone is *usually*
- required only to start the machine up from 'cold' state; after that, waiting
- for the courtesey beep between transmissions is usually enough to reset the
- talkthrough (timeout) timer. But not always .... it's sometimes necessary
- to send the 1750Hz tone every time to do that; it's not a challenge - most
- folks can manage a whistle to do the job for them. I seem to remember an old
- ARRL publication ('FM and Repeaters', perhaps?) referring to / describing
- this scheme and naming it 'whistle on'.
-
-
- Come to think of it, since I got a new car and installed a TM742 with
- hands-free microphone, I don't have a tone burst anymore - seems that Kenwood
- built it into the fist mic :-(
-

-
- > worry about his question. Maybe he was just curious and wanted to go with
-
- Maybe the guy really did know something and was genuinely trying to help. A
- much bigger barrier for 144MHz-ish radios intended for the US market is that
- they tend to want to use 10KHz/20KHz steps rather than the 12.5KHz/25KHz steps
- that are the norm for the rest of the planet :-)
-
- Of course, I don't know the RS rig being discussed, but I've a sneaking
- feeling about those tuning steps .....

-
- Oh, I don't know about that! I've had some success along these lines with
- my local company. The trick seems to be WHO you talk to.
-
- Quick story:
-
- Cable company had just installed new hardware in my area(fiber no less!) and
- I had an extremely strong carrier on 145.25....much worse than it was
- with the old installation. I did a little t hunting, and it seemed that
- there were multiple strong radiators on the block.
-
- First I called the service folks and asked them to come and clean up their
- act. I got what you are talking about when dealing with them. "Oh no sir,
- it can't be us." This is standard service-droid speak. So, a few days
- latter I called and asked for the chief engineer. Didn't get him, but he
- did call me back! I explained my problem to him(I didn't even have to
- mention I was on a first name basis with the folks at the local FCC FOB ;-)
- He agreed that there was likely a problem with the new installation, and that
- he'd have someone out within the next 2-3 days to look into it. Well, I
- checked 145.25 about a week latter, and sure enough, there was a considerable
- attenuation of the signal...rougly down to the original leakage level.
-
- Moral of the story...get hold of the chief technical guru of the company and
- explain that you think there is a problem...he'll be familiar with the FCC
- rules requiring his compliance, and should be alot more ammenable to helping
- investigate the problem. The fact is that if they are leaking OR you are
- managing to get into their system, they DO indeed have a problem that will
- probably cause him greater grief if he doesn't get it attended too! He
- knows that...the service droids don't have a clue...don't even bother with them.

- Larry,
-
- I'm going to give you a grade of 66% because two out of the three sentences
- above are true. It's that last one that got you this grade.
-
- As has been said repeatedly on this group recently, PRB-1 first requires that
- communities accomidate amateur operations, but explicitly excuses itself
- from private contracts, i.e. CC&Rs. So, if a development has CC&R's that
- limit or prohibit towers, antennas, or whatever, PRB-1 supplies NO protection.
- Secondly, though there have been some court battles that we've won, there
- are also a number that we've lost that have gone ALONG way in diluting the
- force of PRB-1 to the point where a community can create quite legal effective
- barriers to you putting up a tower. Many courts have decided that accomidate
- really means just consider the amateurs' application. If the community has
- a method to consider a tower installation, and they deny it, this will stand
- up in some areas of the country. This also doesn't address the several
- communities that have created price barriers. There are some counties in
- CA that require a $1500 non-refundable fee just to put in an application that
- may be denied! Life isn't terribly rosey for us on this front right now.
